Can transistors and MOSFETs be used interchangeably? Generally, MOSFETs and transistors cannot be directly replaced. After a comprehensive understanding of the basic working principle and functional characteristics of transistors, as well as their similarities and different functional characteristics, when designing driving circuits on electronic circuit boards, MOSFETs should often be selected correctly when the driving current is low.
The scientific name of MOS transistor is field-effect transistor, which is an electronic component of metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor. In the electronic industry, MOS field-effect transistor can be divided into two types: enhancement type (also divided into N-channel and P-channel) and depletion type (divided into N-channel and P-channel).
When designing MOSFET as a switch or driver circuit, how to choose between the two? The comparison and understanding of MOSFET and transistor electronic components in other aspects are as follows:
1. A transistor is a bipolar transistor, in which two types of charge carriers, holes and free electrons, participate inside the transistor during operation. Field effect transistor is a unipolar transistor, which means that during operation, either only holes or free electrons participate in conduction, and there is only one type of carrier.
2. A transistor is a current control device, and only when there is an input current can there be an output current. Field effect transistors are voltage controlled devices that can
produce output current even without input current.
3. The input impedance of a transistor is small, while the input impedance of a field-effect transistor is large.
4. Some field-effect transistors have interchangeable source and drain electrodes, but not interchangeable collector and emitter electrodes.
5. Field effect transistors have a low noise coefficient and are suitable for the preamplifier of low-noise amplifiers.
If you want the signal source current to be small, you should choose a field-effect transistor, otherwise, a transistor is more suitable.
