Why do we use Schottky diodes? What conveniences does Schottky diode bring us? Today we will talk about the advantages of Schottky diodes:
Schottky diodes have the advantages of high switching frequency and reduced forward voltage, but their reverse breakdown voltage is relatively low, mostly not higher than 60V, with a maximum of only about 100V, which limits their application range.
In switch mode power supply (SMPS) and power factor correction (PFC) circuits, only fast recovery epitaxial diodes (FRED) and ultra fast recovery diodes (UFRD) are used, such as freewheeling diodes for power switching devices, high-frequency rectifier diodes above 100V for transformer secondary, high-speed diodes between 600V and 1.2kV for RCD buffer circuits, and 600V diodes for PFC boost.
The reverse recovery time Trr of UFRD is also above 20ns, which cannot meet the requirements of 1MHz to 3MHz SMPS in fields such as space stations.
Even for SMPS with a hard switch of 100kHz, due to the high conduction and switching losses of UFRD, the high shell temperature requires a larger heat sink, which increases the volume and weight of the SMPS and does not conform to the development trend of miniaturization and lightweight.
Therefore, the development of high-voltage Schottky diodes above 100V has always been a research topic and a hot topic of concern for people. In recent years, Schottky diodes have made breakthrough progress. High voltage Schottky diodes of 150V and 200V have been launched, and Schottky diodes exceeding 1kV made of new materials have also been successfully developed, injecting new vitality and energy into their applications.
This is the priority of Schottky diodes.
