Semiconductor Schottky diode is a special type of diode that has a wide range of applications in semiconductor devices. Due to its fast response and low noise characteristics, Schottky diodes are widely used in circuit design. However, due to various reasons, Schottky diodes can also malfunction. So how to determine if Schottky diodes are broken?
The failure of Schottky diodes is usually manifested in the following situations: damaged or severely damaged Schottky diodes have a lower output voltage in the circuit than the actual value, and residual current usually occurs. Schottky diodes may exhibit a "pseudo turn off" phenomenon, which means they remain at a low level before disconnecting the circuit.
Schottky diodes may sometimes experience voltage drift. Schottky diodes may experience temperature drift, causing their electrical performance to be affected by temperature changes.
The above are the manifestations of a broken Schottky diode. If these phenomena are found during the inspection process, it can be preliminarily judged that the Schottky diode has been broken.
To determine the quality of a Schottky diode, the following steps can be taken: use the diode testing function of a multimeter to test the polarity of the Schottky diode.
Before making any measurements, please ensure that you have correctly connected the two clips of the multimeter. Use the resistance test function of the multimeter to connect the two clips to the metal terminals of the Schottky diode, then measure the resistance. Use the diode test function of the multimeter to connect the clips to the two poles of the Schottky diode, press the test button, and test whether there is current flowing through it. If no current flows through the Schottky diode, press the "reverse polarity" button and test again. If the current still does not flow, it can be determined that the Schottky diode is broken.
If there is current flowing through the Schottky diode, but not the expected current, it can be preliminarily judged that the Schottky diode is damaged. If the above steps still cannot determine the quality of the Schottky diode, an oscilloscope can be used.
