The switching power supply consists of main components such as high-frequency magnetic core, high-frequency capacitor, high reverse voltage high-power transistor, power rectifier diode, and control circuit. Among them, the rectifier diode is a key component because it has the highest power consumption, accounting for about 30% of the power consumption. Therefore, it is required that the rectifier diode has the characteristics of small forward voltage drop and short switching time in high-speed and high current working state.
1. Schottky diode is a diode made by using the potential barrier formed by the contact between metal and semiconductor. Unlike diffusion type PN junction diode, its forward voltage drop is only half of that of PN junction, so power consumption can be reduced by half.
2. Schottky diodes utilize a majority carrier device and do not have the transient recovery characteristics of PN junction diode barrier for minority carrier injection and storage. This results in significant differences in their recovery characteristics under the same application conditions, with a recovery time of approximately 1:50. Due to the much shorter recovery time of SBD, its switching speed is twice as fast as PN junction diodes, and the shorter the recovery time of the diode, the smaller its average power loss.
In summary, in switching power supplies, Schottky diodes are more ideal than fast recovery diodes, as their power consumption can be reduced by more than half, further improving the efficiency of the power supply. Therefore, Schottky diodes are essential supporting devices for switching power supplies, widely used in regulators, rectifiers, inverters, UPS, etc., and can also be used as fast clamp diodes.
